FAQ

SCJ is derived from the Latin words for our Congregation’s official title: Sacerdotum Corde Jesu. This is translated as “Priests of the Sacred Heart.” The three letters appear after the names of our community members, and we call ourselves SCJs. In some parts of the world, we are also known as Dehonians in reference to our founder, Fr. Leo John Dehon.

There are approximately 2,200 Priests of the Sacred Heart in more than forty countries on five continents. There are 100 Priests of the Sacred Heart in the United States.

Yes, we are. All of us are members of the Priests of the Sacred Heart. However, each of us raises funds for different causes. Here at Sacred Heart Monastery, we raise funds for spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart and helping people grow in their spiritual life; for supporting mission work in the United States and overseas; for the education of priests; for medical and housing assistance for retired priests and brothers. Father Jack raises funds principally for the support of the Sacred Heart Southern Missions in northern Mississippi and the Apostolate of the Printed Word. Father Greg at St. Joseph’s Indian School raises funds for various ministries of the Priests of the Sacred Heart in South Dakota. Please feel free to support whichever groups appeal to you.

The Priests of the Sacred Heart do not condone sexual misconduct of any kind. We have detailed policies regarding this issue that are audited and certified by a well-respected national agency. These policies are re-evaluated and updated regularly. We take all accusations of misconduct seriously and cooperate fully with civil authorities in the investigation of such allegations. Our concern is that any injury be healed and that those in need of help be helped.

The Feast of the Sacred Heart changes each year, depending on the date of Easter. It is always celebrated on the tenth Friday after Easter Sunday (or 19 days after Pentecost).
