It takes a long time to become a fully-professed member of the Priests of the Sacred Heart. The total period could be up to ten years as a candidate advances in his vocation. Some discern God’s voice supporting their vocation and some do not. A major first big step is becoming a novice. New novices usually enter the novitiate after a couple of years of college or university and having lived in the religious community as a candidate.
For the Novice, formal college studies are put aside as the new novice enters a period of intense study and prayer, living in a smaller community led by a novice master. As novices they learn more about our Founder of the Priests of the Sacred Heart, Fr. Leo John Dehon, and how they can live according to the “Rule of Life.”
We are blessed this year to accept 3 new novices to our community. They are Hubert Liassidji, John Huan Nguyen and Angel Romero.
Hubert is from Togo, a west-African nation with a population that is estimated to be 28% Catholic. He came to the United States in 2010 and became a US citizen in August of 2017 supported by joyful members of the SCJ community.
Hubert is a good guy. You immediately feel good around him because he always has a smile on his face. He has a degree in Chemistry and was pursuing additional training to become a Chemical Engineer when he heard the call to religious life in his mid-thirties.
He was first admitted to the formation program in January 2017 and had been attending St. Xavier University in Chicago. He has always had a special devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and has a great desire to help change the world. Hubert wants to stand up for those who are abandoned, console broken hearts and reconcile people.
Angel is 34 years old and is originally from Chihuahua, Mexico. Prior to entering the community as a candidate 2 years ago he worked in the legal field. The past couple of years he has attended the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.
What you notice about Angel is his deep sense of spirituality. The Church and his relationship to God has always been a central focus in his life. At the young age of 12, he became a lector at Mass announcing the Word of God.
As a Novice, he is looking forward to be able to concentrate on his prayer life to grow in his vocation. He knows that this will be a serious time but also wants to have fun. His interests are reading and walking in the beautiful woods around the Seminary in Hales Corners.
John Huan Nguyen comes to us from the Vietnamese District under the supervision of Fr Francis Vu Tran, SCJ, the superior of the District. He is 31 yeas old and is returning to Hales Corners having previously attending the English as a Second Language program. Once he completes his Novitiate he will begin his studies at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology. We are excited to have John join us at the Novitiate and pray that more of his brothers from Vietnam will be following him to Wisconsin in the future.
Let the Priests of the Sacred Heart pray for your loved ones and intentions.
