Fr. Steve Huffstetter, SCJ took his first vows as a young man in his early 20s. Seven years later, in 1989, he was ordained to the Priesthood. Growing up in the shadow of University of Notre Dame may have influenced him in his life path but he eventually came to know of the Priests of the Sacred Heart through an advertisement.
Along the way Fr. Steve studied at Loyola University and at the Catholic Theological Union where he earned a Doctorate in Ministry in Theology and a second Doctorate in Cross Cultural Ministry.
It was his interest in learning about other cultures that led him to serve the majority of his ministry among the Native Americans in South Dakota. Even before he was ordained, he worked on the Cheyenne River Reservation with the Pastoral Team in the town of Eagle Butte, SD. Throughout his ministry, he ministered mainly in South Dakota and eventually he was appointed Executive Director of St. Joseph’s Indian School, a position he held until 2013.
In June of 2013, he was elected by members of the Congregation to be the Provincial Superior of the US Province of the Priests of the Sacred Heart. Although he was saddened to leave the people of South Dakota, he accepted his new responsibilities with great joy. He served in this position slightly short of two years.
In May of 2015 a new position was offered to Fr. Steve. While in Rome, Italy as a delegate to select new leadership for the Congregation during a General Chapter he was elected to the General Curia of Priests of the Sacred Heart. He remains in that position today, in his second term, with a variety of responsibilities such as supervising the work of the Priests of the Sacred Heart in Latin America and India.
Recently, he and his fellow Dehonians had an audience with Pope Francis in Rome. He is shown below in the Pope Paul VI Audience Hall in front of the massive sculpture the Resurrection. This famous piece of art weighs over 8 tons and depicts the Christ rising from the dead.
