In August 2015, Fr. Ed Kilianski, SCJ, was named 15th Provincial Superior of the US Province of the Priests of the Sacred Heart in an “extraordinary” election.
Why “extraordinary”? In June, Fr. Stephen Huffstetter, SCJ, was elected to the General Council in Rome, necessitating he end his term as US Provincial Superior earlier than planned, and forcing a special election.
Fr. Ed brings humility, grace and energy to his new role. A Buffalo native, Fr. Ed, 60, felt called to the priesthood since childhood. By the age of seven he was telling his family that he wanted to be a priest...and he has followed that path his entire life.
Ordained in 1983, Fr. Ed has served in vocation ministry and in pastoral ministry in various locations. As parochial vicar at St. Teresa of Avila in Bodega, California, he first felt called to Hispanic ministry and began extensive study in Mexico.
In 2004 he moved to Houston and ministered at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton parish. Four years later he was named pastor of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a 103-year-old congregation distinguished as Houston’s first Mexican-American church.
“Leaving Our Lady of Guadalupe was very hard,” said Fr. Ed. “I have loved my years there. But I see provincial administration as a ministry of service. Now my call is with our province.”
Elected as Vice Provincial under Fr. Ed is Fr. Quang Nguyen, SCJ. Originally from Vietnam, Fr. Quang , 50, currently serves as province vocation director.
