In early 2017, under the guidance of Fr. Jojappa, SCJ, pastor of the Bell Tower Church in Vempadu, India, the Priests of the Sacred Heart opened the Dehon Tailoring Center.
The center teaches women in the very poor village of Vempadu sewing skills, helping them earn money for their families. Just as important, the center gives women over 50 a sense of hope and purpose.
In their village society, women of their age often feel cast aside, no longer relevant to the community. At the center, the women are eager to learn new skills, and they take pride in their work.
Shortly after opening, the center received an order from a local shop for 100 purses, followed by orders for school uniforms.
Based on its early success, the center is already expanding. To manage the growth, Sister Merita, a former superior in her community in Rome, has been brought in to supervise the workers and the sewing projects, for which she has several new ideas! Her tasks also include marketing and inventory.
Fr. Jojappa is grateful for the prayers and support of American friends who helped make the tailoring center a reality.
Let the Priests of the Sacred Heart pray for your loved ones and intentions.
