Serving the Poor Children of Migrant Families in Vietnam

Serving the Poor Children of Migrant Families in Vietnam

Since 2008 the Priests of the Sacred Heart have partnered with a diocesan parish near Ho Chi Minh City to help educate the children of the poor. Starting with a single room at the parish, the school fast-growing school has moved several times...and must move again.

Over the past several years, the area has been flooded by migrants from remote, poverty-stricken villages who come for the many low-paying factory jobs in their quest to create better lives. The costs for school tuition and uniforms are beyond their means. Many children end up as child laborers or are left alone and can get into trouble.

Our school tries not to turn away any child. Thus, the challenge of accommodating all the children continues to mount. The classrooms are decidedly “low tech” and overcrowded, and the dedicated teachers work two shifts each day. The children, however, are eager to learn.

We recently learned that the lease on our existing building will not be renewed after the end of 2016. Land has been located to build a permanent school, but land alone is very expensive even before construction costs. As we continue in faith to provide for these children and plan for the new school, we are asking our American friends to help contribute much-needed financial support.
