Three years ago the Indonesian Province assumed responsibility for the Yos Sudarso Foundation which administers a junior and senior high school in the Lampung Province on the island of Sumatra. Combined, there are approximately 400 students in the two schools.
November 26 is commemorated throughout the congregation as “SCJ Memorial Day,” a time to remember in a special way those SCJs who have given their lives in ministry. Among them were Bishop Joseph Wittebols and 27 other SCJs who died during the 1964 Simba rebellion in the Congo. Today, November 26, is the 48th anniversary of the bishop’s death.
Provincial superior among those present at canonization of 1st Native American Fr. Tom Cassidy, SCJ, provincial superior, and Fr. Tom Westhoven, SCJ, joined Fr. Francis Vu Tran, an SCJ student in Rome, at the October 21 canonization ceremony at St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican. Among those canonized was Kateri Tekakwitha, the first Native American saint.
