Event: 'Ordo February 22' Print
  American Ordo
About the American Ordo The American Ordo is a guide to the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours for each day. Celebrations proper to the United States are noted. For celebrations below the rank of feast the citations for the readings are from the Season of the year. Proper readings are noted for some dates. For pastoral reasons one may choose readings that are appropriate to the occasion. On solemnities, feasts and memorials which have a proper preface, Eucharistic prayer IV should not be used because the prefaces for the days are an integral part of the Mass text for that day. Your comments on this Ordo are welcome.
Date: Wednesday, February 22, 2012

FEBRUARY 22, WEDNESDAY
ASH WEDNESDAY (violet)
Mass:  proper, Penitential rite is omitted when ashes are blessed.  Preface IV of Lent

Ashes are blessed and given after the gospel and homily.  If blessed outside of Mass, the Liturgy of the Word is celebrated using the Mass texts.  The blessing and distribution of the ashes follow the homily.  The service concludes with the General intercessions and a Blessing.  Appropriate hymns should be sung.
Hours:  4th week of psalter and proper for Ash Wednesday
Morning Prayer: the Pss. and canticle may be taken from Friday of Week 3 because of their penitential character.
